Rapid evaluation of notch stress intensity factors using the peak stress method with 3D tetrahedral finite element models: Comparison of commercial c…

2022

The peak stress method (PSM) allows a rapid application of the notch stress intensity factor (NSIF) approach to the fatigue life assessment of welded structures, by employing the linear elastic peak stresses evaluated by FE analyses with coarse meshes. Because of the widespread adoption of 3D modeling of large and complex structures in the industry, the PSM has recently been boosted by including four-node and ten-node tetrahedral elements of Ansys FE software, which allows to discretize complex geometries. In this paper, a Round Robin among eleven Italian Universities has been performed to calibrate the PSM with seven different commercial FE software packages. Several 3D mode I, II and III …

Integrative analysis of the mineralogical and chemical composition of modern microbialites from ten Mexican lakes: What do we learn about their forma…

2021

International audience; Interpreting the environmental conditions under which ancient microbialites formed relies upon comparisons with modern analogues. This is why we need a detailed reference framework relating the chemical and mineralogical compositions of modern microbialites to the physical and chemical parameters prevailing in the environments where they form. Here, we measured the chemical, including major and trace elements, and mineralogical composition of microbialites from ten Mexican lakes as well as the chemical composition of the surrounding waters. Saturation states of lakes with different mineral phases were systematically determined and correlations between solution and so…

Hybrid Equilibrium Finite Element Formulation for Cohesive Crack Propagation

2019

Equilibrium elements have been developed in hybrid formulation with independent equilibrated stress fields on each element. Traction equilibrium condition, at sides between adjacent elements and at sides of free boundary, is enforced by use of independent displacement laws at each side, assumed as Lagrangian parameters. The displacement degrees of freedom belongs to the element side, where an extrinsic interface can be embedded. The embedded interface is defined by the same stress fields of the hybrid equilibrium element and it does not require any additional degrees of freedom. The extrinsic interface is developed in the consistent thermodynamic framework of damage mechanics with internal …

Existence of normal Hall subgroups by means of orders of products

2018

Let G be a finite group, let π be a set of primes and let p be a prime. We characterize the existence of a normal Hall π‐subgroup in G in terms of the order of products of certain elements of G. This theorem generalizes a characterization of A. Moretó and the second author by using the orders of products of elements for those groups having a normal Sylow p‐subgroup 6. As a consequence, we also give a π‐decomposability criterion for a finite group also by means of the orders of products.

Removing the saturation assumption in Bank-Weiser error estimator analysis in dimension three

2020

International audience; We provide a new argument proving the reliability of the Bank-Weiser estimator for Lagrange piecewise linear finite elements in both dimension two and three. The extension to dimension three constitutes the main novelty of our study. In addition, we present a numerical comparison of the Bank-Weiser and residual estimators for a three-dimensional test case.

Determining the deformation and resulting coupling efficiency degradation of ultrastable fiber-coupled optical benches under load.

2020

Fiber-coupled optical benches are an integral part of many laser systems. The base of such an optical bench is usually a slab of solid material, onto which optical components are fixed. In many environments, the ability to retain high fiber coupling efficiency under mechanical loads is essential. In this article, we study the fiber-to-fiber coupling efficiency under the application of static mechanical loads experimentally and theoretically: We constructed a simple three-point bending setup to interferometrically measure the deformation of an optical bench under load. Using the same setup, we further recorded the resulting coupling efficiency variations. The examined optical benches are bas…

Strategies for numerical simulation of linear friction welding of metals: a review

2017

Linear friction welding (LFW) is a solid-state joining process used to weld non-axisymmetric components. Material joining is obtained through the reciprocating motion of two specimens undergoing an axial force. During this process, the heat source is determined by the frictional work transformed into heat. This results in a local softening of the material and plays a key role in the onset of the bonding conditions. In this paper, a critical analysis of the different approaches used to simulate the LFW processes is provided. The focus of the paper is the comparison of different modeling strategies and the most relevant outputs available, i.e. temperature, strain and stress distribution, mate…

Resistive communications based on neuristors

2017

Memristors are passive elements that allow us to store information using a single element per bit. However, this is not the only utility of the memristor. Considering the physical chemical structure of the element used, the memristor can function at the same time as memory and as a communication unit. This paper presents a new approach to the use of the memristor and develops the concept of resistive communication.

Electromagnetic and Thermal Modelling for Calculating Ageing Rate of Distribution Transformers

2018

Prediction of the lifetime for transformers is very important for maintenance and asset management. Finite element analysis was performed on a 5 MVA distribution transformers with aluminium foil-type windings and voltage rating 6600 V/23000 V. Electromagnetic modelling is implemented on the full three-phase transformer to calculate distributed losses, taking the skin effect into account. To reduce the computational burden, the distributed losses in one phase are used to analyse temperature rise in one phase of the transformer. The temperature rise results were used to determine the ageing rate of the transformer. Further, the influence of ambient temperature and cooling on the temperature r…
